Salle JEUDI opened the Milton Keynes Branch in the autumn of 1997 at the Wavendon Gate Pavilion. It drew immediately from the core of young fencers from the Leighton Buzzard area and soon started getting enquiries from both established adult fencers and beginners.
The club thrived on hard work and soon local residents began to take an interest. At its height in 1999 there were over 30 on the books.
It soon became obvious that the venue was to small and the club moved to Wavendon First school in the village, where the Club now resides.
Over the following two years many of our established fencers moved away from the area or in the case of the juniors went off to colleges and universities. These were difficult to replace. The club was still healthy and producing fencers of a high standard one had come to expect from a Salle JEUDI unit.

Over the following years the club maintained its high standards and this was born out by the results obtained at various competitions the members entered.
David our coach had been appointed fencing master at the local high school in the autumn of 2000 taking curriculum time-tabled classes on Wednesday afternoons.

A resurgence in the junior squad from this school and the lower schools in the area lead to the founding of the Musketeers squad of junior fencers.

We now have a thriving junior section, many of these now compete at national tournaments throughout the UK.
Many of these also fence at Salle JEUDI HQ in Bedford were they are gaining valuable experience against the much more experienced junior fencers.

Footwork is of paramount importance. The means of delivering an attack or the avenue of escape and counter-offensive in times of trouble. Practice can bring all pupils to a high degree of competence.

Footwork allied with good accurate bladework is the essence of good fencing.

You can never be a good fencer without mobility.

In line with our philosophy our young sabre specialist takes a single line group lesson on simple footwork. This will add to the students confidence, at the same time help an instructor under training to understand the difficulties of running a simple lesson.

A Lesson from
a Master

Remember there is very little that is new in fencing technique.
It has developed in Europe over the past 1000 years.
Duelling, be it the field of honour or the battlefield, was always Dangerous.
Fencing is now a sport, with safety paramount.
This enables the modern fencer to be swifter and closer to their opponent  than their ancestor.

Milton Keynes Musketeers

By Katy Edwards

The Milton Keynes Musketeers is a fencing club, which welcomes all ranges of fencers, from beginner to expert, and child to adult.

I've been fencing at the club for quite a long time and have found it to be a good way to use up extra energy. It's also a more exciting way to keep fit and healthy, because exercises like aerobics and jogging can get to be very bland, and boring. In the fencing club, there's a lot of other people to fence, plus you can either fence someone better than you - for a challenge - or work with someone on your ability level.

Everyone in the fencing club is friendly, and some loud, so you don't have to worry about not fitting in. Also, it's not constant work all evening. So if you happen to not be so fit, and get out of breath easily you can have breaks and rest for a while. Other times you can just fence for fun, but overall fencing will eventually improve your fitness level and you'll become more healthy and able to work harder.

There are also exercises and lessons to improve your skill level, or to achieve new skills. Sometimes students will get to lead everyone in a simple exercise, and sometimes there're different things - like mini competitions. For fun, though.

Most of the members are teenagers/children, though there are a few adults. I would recommend Milton Keynes Musketeers to anyone who wants to have fun, take up a new sport, or become more fit.

Milton Keynes Musketeers

I've been fencing at Salle Jeudi and the Musketeers for 6 years as a "born again" fencer after my daughters caught the bug. I decided I might as well join in rather than sit and watch and it has been fun.

There's a good variety of people, different club nights at different venues and a valuable full training day once a month.

My daughters have had the opportunity to attend Leon Paul Junior Series competitions, which they enjoyed greatly.

During these I brushed up on my refereeing skills and, encouraged by the experience, began a coach training course with Dave, the club instructor. Salle Jeudi has been both enjoyable and informative.

Cheers, Peter
